The Edmonton Oilers made news and have announced they have signed veteran Sam Gagner to a one-year deal worth $775K. This feels like a bit of a nostalgic move, but he’s the type of heart and soul-guy the team needs. The team, city, and Gagner himself should all be excited about this move. This marks Gagner’s third tenure with the club. He was last with Edmonton until a February 2020 trade sent him to the Detroit Red Wings.

In Edmonton Oilers News Sam Gagner Signs a One-Year Deal
Going back to late August, Sam Gagner was in the news as he signed a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers. He was recovering from hip surgeries still and was not at Camp to play preseason games. Instead, he knew he would have to go to Bakersfield in the AHL to start the season. Fast forward to today, and Gagner has done everything asked of him. He’s tallied five points in three games with the Condors. That shows he’s back at a strong level of play. In 2022-23, with the Winnipeg Jets, he only managed 48 games played, scoring eight times and chipping in with six assists. At 34 years old, expectations are not super high but his positivity around the locker room will be appreciated.
What Does This Mean for the Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers need some stability and reliability throughout their lineup. With Gagner, you know you are getting that appreciated level of accountability, and mixed with offensive skills. He can slot in on the power play, and help ignite the third and fourth lines offensively. The Oilers have struggled with depth offensively thus far. In eight games, they only have eight players with more than one point. No wonder the team is 2-5-1. Players like Dylan Holloway or Ryan McLeod need a spark. Gagner will not only provide playmaking help but also push for roster spots.
