The PWHL announced today that its inaugural six teams finally have logos and names. These team names are the Minnesota Frost, Boston Fleet, Toronto Sceptres, Victoire de Montreal, New York Sirens, and Ottawa Charge. News of the team names had been teased, but were revealed on Monday.

According to the PWHL’s website, each team name represents something about their respective cities, team culture, and the legacy of hockey. The league’s teams went without names for the inaugural season. However, that changes for season two. There was some delay in the names coming out, but they’re here, now.
“The unveiling of these new team identities marks a significant milestone for the entire PWHL community,” said Amy Scheer, PWHL Senior Vice President of Business Operations to the PWHL. “Over the inaugural season, we rigorously developed the most authentic team brands for each city. The PWHL has united the professional women’s hockey community, and we are excited for these new identities to deepen the connection between the teams and their local communities. We want these to become symbols that our players and fans alike can rally behind as we move forward in this new chapter of our journey.”
Jerseys will be released in late October or early November. All teams will retain their primary colours from last season while introducing additional secondary colours.
A schedule has yet to be released. However, there’s anticipation the season will start before the New Year.
What Each Name Represents
Note: all information is from the PWHL.
Boston Fleet: The name represents the city’s maritime history. It features an anchor and a dark green colour. The angle of the “B” is tilted forward to symbolize the team’s forward momentum.
Minnesota Frost: The name “frost” pays homage to Minnesota’s winter temperatures, and the team will keep its deep purple colour. Minnesota is defending Walter Cup champion.
Toronto Sceptres: Pulling inspiration from being called “Queen City,” using the symbol of a sceptre as an image of strength and power. The logo has an intersecting T and S to showcase the identity of the team.
Victoire de Montreal: The name was chosen to embody Montreal’s competitive spirit and consistent pursuit of achievement. The wings on the logo are meant to allude to the goddess of victory. The hidden “M” is a tribute to the city, and has a fleur-de-lis, the symbol of Quebec.
New York Sirens: The name choice is supposed to embody the hustle and bustle of New York City, all its sights and sounds and the people who live there, and the sound of a goal horn.
Ottawa Charge: The inspiration for the name came from the Ottawa city motto– “Advance- Ottawa– En Vant.”
“Our teams were so proud to represent their home markets last season, and as we launch Season Two, we’re elevating that pride with new identities that truly embody the spirit of each club,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations in the press release. “These new names and logos capture the dynamic energy of our athletes and enhance our teams’ presence in their cities, building a stronger foundation for the future of our league.”
