When it comes to rumours and Elliotte Friedman is the one talking, you listen. For Ottawa Senator fans and rumours at the trade deadline, it is a breath of fresh air, to feel like they’re buyers, and for good reason. They are firmly entrenched in a playoff race into March month. Furthermore, if you listen to the latest edition of 32 Thoughts the Podcast, Friedman is somewhat optimistic, and although leaves some to the imagination, is quite specific in his rumours.
As discussed on today’s show with @frank_seravalli, here are a couple more names that have been out there, what would you offer for Donato or Peterka? #GoSensGo pic.twitter.com/A1iQmkqcPG

Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline Rumours from the Main Rumour Millwright
According to Friedman, there was really only one player he could name specifically, and he almost seemed excited to do so. Mostly he just seemed proud of himself for nailing it. But still, Ottawa general manager Steven Staios would have to pull some magic strings, which Friedman didn’t go into great deal on.
The name that was mentioned was Ryan Donato of the Chicago Blackhawks. The reason? Well the reason being was one stat in particular that would be coveted by this Sens lineup. Even-strength goals. The Sens are a team known to struggle offensively, and adding even-strength offence, would be a huge benefit to this year’s team.
We already mentioned JJ Peterka for Ottawa Senators rumours, who would still be a nice option. However, again making the Xs and Os workout under the cap might get tangly. Peterka is at 17 goals and 28 assists for 45 points through 56 games, with 14 of those goals at even strength.
Meanwhile, Ryan Donato finds himself in the top-25 in the entire league with 18 even-strength goals. Overall he has 21 goals and 22 assists totaling 43 points in 58 contests on the season for the Hawks. Additionally, Donato is the type of player that can elevate his game if he skates with talented linemates. A little depth scoring punch could go a long way in Ottawa. He only makes $2 million on an expiring contract, so might be attainable. On the other hand, Peterka commands more in terms of trade bait, as he is an RFA after this season, currently around $850K.
How Would the Sens Make Something like this Work
In terms of making the deal work, it would be interesting to analyze both sides. From the Sens side, they are likely to give up Jacob Bernard-Docker. Another option, that might open up more possibilities is Anton Forsberg. In contrast, the only type of prospects to throw in, would be like a Cole Reinhardt. He is the AHL-type guys that have to clear waivers to be sent back down, or in other words, aren’t waivers exempt. It would be some value for the Sens and the team returning a serviceable depth player.
It would be good to understand the asking price before thinking about which assets to trade away. Also, it is worth keeping in mind that Chicago won’t be retaining salary at this point.
The Final Pieces for Ottawa Senators Deadline Rumours
Friedman also briefly mentioned them needing a depth defenceman. It is logical when you think Tyler Kleven is currently injured. He has been a regular on the third pairing.
We all know how tight it has been in Ottawa Senators with spending hampering the ability to act on rumours. Given their current cap situation, they’ve had to go 11-7. It’s a pain but one that Staios has to deal with now.
All-in-all, if you’re Staios you have to begin to think what this means for the city. Ottawa is craving playoff hockey and we all know how players like Thomas Chabot or Brady Tkachuk want it.
