Team reportedly looking for new top wide out
While there is so much focus on the Las Vegas Raiders search for a quarterback this offseason, the team has many other needs.
One of those areas of needs is at wide receiver. Recently, The Athletic reported that the Raiders want to add a No. 1 wide receiver this offseason. Thus, that would mean Jakobi Meyers, who finished last season as the team’s top receiver after the Davante Adams trade, would be the No. 2 receiver.
Of course, finding a true No. 1 wide receiver won’t be easy. Tee Higgins was considered, by far, the top receiving option in free agency. However, he was given the franchise tag by the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, thus virtually taking him off the market.
The wide receiver market without Higgins isn’t great.
It’s a pretty old class with players who may not be considered as true No. 1 options including Stefon Diggs, former Raider Amari Cooper, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins, Mike Williams and Brandin Cooks and now Adams, who was cut by the Jets on Tuesday.
A wide receiver to keep an eye on for the Raiders is Chris Godwin of Tampa Bay. He and Raiders’ part owner Tom Brady are former teammates and are close and new Raiders’ general manager John Spytek was in Tampa Bay with Godwin.
He is considered the best receiver available with Higgins now off the market. Godwin, 29, should be sought after and he will be expensive. But me may not be a top-level No. 1 receiver, but he would help the Raiders.
If the Raiders want to find their top receiver in the draft, they have the No. 6 overall pick, they could consider drafting Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan. He is a huge target with great ball skills who is considered the top receiver prospect in the draft other than Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter who is widely expected to be taken in the top three or four picks. Other possible top wide receiver prospects includes Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka and Missouri’s Luther Burden.
There are no sure things in the draft, but this may be the Raiders’ best route if their looking to add a long-term No. 1 wide receiver this offseason.
