Defense is supposed to be strong, but numbers say otherwise
The strength of the Las Vegas Raiders’ roster in 2024 is supposed to be the defense.
The unit finished strong last season and that kept Antonio Pierce go from the interim head coach to the full-time leader of the franchise. And the team added star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins in free agency to the bolster the unit. And there has been some moments in the early season in which we have seen the potential of this unit.
But, overall, the unit hasn’t been great statistically speaking. Check out these numbers provided by The Associated Press.
Teams in Super Bowl era to allow a passer rating of 100+, at least 5.3 yards/carry and have 1 takeaway or fewer in 1st 3 games:

Yes, there are issues in the passing and running defensive games. Also, there hasn’t been a consistent pass-rush other from superstar Maxx Crosby and the team isn’t getting turnovers.
So, while the defense can be good, there is plenty of work to do.
