Aidan O’Connell has favor from Davante Adams but it will be a battle in camp
The Las Vegas Raiders are about to have a quarterback competition in camp. Aidan O’Connell ended the season with a winning record under Antonio Pierce. However, it wasn’t impressive enough to hold off competition. The Raiders signed Gardner Minshew from the Indianapolis Colts to have a chance to start for the Raiders.
The OTAs didn’t create much hype for either player, with reports focusing on the offense’s struggles. It is unknown whether that will carry over into the season, but it proves there will be a true battle for the starting job. Both quarterbacks will have the opportunity to become the starters for the Raiders.
During an NFL insider segment on ESPN’s Sportscenter, Jeremy Fowler gave insight on who is in the lead going into training camp.
“O’Connell and Minshew in the spring went tit for tat; went after it. O’Connell probably has the slight edge right now based on coming into Year 2, being more vocal. I’m told he’s acting like a starting quarterback and Davante Adams loves him, which always helps certainly with the brownie points.”
“But Minshew has come in, shown some moxie. He’s already got the offense, he’s changing plays at the line of scrimmage, I’m told,” Fowler said. “He’s been good at the off-script stuff.”
Considering his sway with the organization, O’Connell’s having Adams in his corner is a big deal. The former Green Bay Packer helped new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy come into the building and has been high on the hire.
