Joseph’s second stint with team is a short one
In the first surprise cut for the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, the team is reportedly saying goodbye to 2016 first-round pick Karl Joseph for a second time.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Tuesday afternoon that the safety is one of the team’s cuts as it gets to the 53-man roster deadline by 1 p.m. PT.

Joseph was signed this offseason to be a key backup for the Raiders. He received $987,500 in guaranteed money. The Raiders made Joseph the No. 14 overall draft pick in 2016 but he didn’t make much of an impact with the team that time around, and was shipped to the Cleveland Browns in 2020 as a free agent. Joseph, who turns 28 next week, has started 49 NFL games.
The safety was hurt much of training camp and played Sunday in the preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers, which fueled speculation he could be on the roster bubble. That speculation has apparently become reality.
Roderic Teamer will likely make the team as a backup instead of Joseph. He played seven games with the Los Angeles Chargers under new Raiders’ defensive coordinator Gus Bradley last year, which means that the coaching staff went with familiarity. The team also likes fourth-round pick, safety Tyree Gillespie as a backup.
