Raiders suddenly have less at the position than they thought
The Las Vegas Raiders suddenly lost some veteran depth pieces at the wide receiver position including two free-agent additions.
Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup, who was expected to be either the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver, retired. Plus, former Los Angeles Chargers receiver Jalen Guyton, who will vie for a spot on the 53-man roster, is on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He can be activated when he is healthy enough to practice.
Let’s take a look what it means:
The top three:
Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker.
Tucker is the only one affected by Gallup’s retirement. Tucker, a third-round pick last season who looked good in the OTA sessions, was the favorite to be the No. 3 receiver. Now, it’s basically a lock.
The contenders:
Kristian Wilkerson, Tyreik McAllister, D.J. Turner, Keelan Doss (signed this week), Tuly Griffin, Alex Bachman, Jeff Foreman, Ramel Keyton,
Favorites:
Guyton (if he returns in time), Wilkerson, Turner, Griffin, Doss.
Free agent options:
Michael Thomas, Hunter Renfrow, Corey Davis, Julio Jones, Russell Gage, Robbie Chosen
Wait-and-see:
There will be many receiver available after teams cut down to the initial 53-man rosters on Aug. 27. The Raiders could scour the waiver wire then.
Conclusion:
It’s my opinion that the Raiders need to add here. The departure of Gallup makes it’s pretty big gap between Tucker and the rest of the receiving core. Guyton still should be in the mix. Yet, at some point before the season starts, I’d expect Las Vegas to look to add at the position.
