Could Raiders trade former starting quarterback?
The Las Vegas Raiders have found their 2025 starting quarterback by agreeing to trade for Geno Smith.
But what about his backup quarterback?
There is media speculation Las Vegas could be interested in signing free agent Marcus Mariota as Smith’s backup. It would make sense since Mariota, who was Las Vegas’ backup in 2020-21, played at Oregon in college under new Raiders’ offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
If the Raiders were to bring in Mariota — or any other veteran quarterback — that would make Aidan O’Connell, who finished the past two seasons as the Raiders’ starting quarterback expendabale.
While the Raiders likely wouldn’t get a whole lot in return for O’Connell, a fourth-round ick in 2023, there could be some interest. Every team is interested in adding quarterbacks to its program, so there could be a modest market if Las Vegas were to decide to shop O’Connell.
What are your thoughts on the Raiders’ backup quarterback situation behind Smith?
