It would be mind blowing
Eyebrows were raised around the NFL on Wednesday morning when NFL Media reported that new minority Raiders’ owner Tom Brady reached out to his New England coach Bill Belichick recently about the now open vacancy after Antonio Pierce’s firing.
Here are some thoughts on the development:
It would be the story of the offseason:
This would turn heads in the NFL. Brady and Belichick joining forces in Las Vegas. It would be fascinating to watch unfold.
Brady clearly has a big role:
Since he joined the Raiders in October as a minority owner, Raiders owner Mark Davis said Brady would have a strong role as a consultant (especially when it comes to choosing the team’s next quarterback). Reports emerged after Pierce was fired that Brady would have a big role in the coaching hiring process. This news certainly confirms that. Brady wants the Raiders to go big and this shows it.
It makes sense:
Why wouldn’t Brady call Belichick? The two were together for 20 seasons and they won six Super Bowls together. They’re the greatest coach-quarterback pairing in the history of the game.
Would Belichick do it?
Belichick, of course, was hired at North Carolina less than a month ago. But he does have a manageable buy out if he wants to leave the NFL Media report stated, at least, one other NFL team has recently reached out to him. One would think Belichick knew Brady and the Raiders could be a possibility when he committed to the college job. So, perhaps it isn’t a position he’d want. But we will see where this goes. Wednesday, The Athletic reported Belichick has no plans of leaving North Carolina. But, clearly, things can change.
Bill Belichick has no plans to return to the NFL, per sources.
I’m told his sole focus is on coaching and recruiting for North Carolina, as he continues building the Tar Heels’ future. He’s recruiting today in New Jersey.— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) January 8, 2025
What if it happened?
There would be so many questions. Who would be his offensive coordinator? What would general manager Tom Telesco’s role be? Who would his quarterback be? How long would Belichick, he turns 73 in April, want to stick around? These would all be intriguing questions if this actually happens.
Expect more Brady-connected targets:
While Belichick is the headliner, it’s likely Brady is reaching out to other potential candidates he ahs worked with including Mike Vrabel and Brian Flores and perhaps even Bruce Arians.
