Las Vegas reportedly had interest in former Giants’ quarterback
The Las Vegas Raiders reportedly had interest in signing former New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones, but they were not able to reel him in.
According to multiple reports, Jones has signed with the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad.
The end result is not a surprise. Fox Sports (which broke Jones’ signing with Minnesota) reported Monday evening that Jones had eliminated the Raiders from consideration after he cleared waivers and became a free agent earlier in the day.
NFL Media reported Sunday the Las Vegas Raiders would be among the teams that was expected to pursue Jones. The report stated the Raiders’ brass liked Jones and the team could give him a chance to finish this season as an audition for him to be their bridge starter next year. The team is expected to try to draft a quarterback early in 2025.
However, ESPN reported Jones was not interested finishing out the string with a non-playoff contender and he wanted to reset and sign with a contender. The Raiders are 2-9, while Minnesota is 9-2.
It was understandable why the Raiders would have interest in Jones, It could be argued that he would be an upgrade over the Raiders current group of quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell and Desmond Ridder.
Getting a pre-free agency look at Jones would have been beneficial as well. But, at the end of the day, Jones is a marginal talent who likely wouldn’t have made a major late impact on the team.
So, it’s not a major lost opportunity. Plus, f the Raiders want to revisit Jones as a potential bridge quarterback in 2025, they can do so in March.
