Could Las Vegas try to trade 2023 top pick?
The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly begun to cut down the roster to the initial 53-man roster by Tuesday’s 1 p.m. PT deadline.
Of course, there are many tough decisions to be made. There have been some rumors circulating that one of those player the team may make a tough decision is defensive end Tyree Wilson. The No. 7 overall draft pick in the 2023 draft had a quiet rookie season and hasn’t done much in training camp or in the preseason this year.
It would be shocking if the Raiders cut Wilson, but perhaps they could consider seeing if there is a trade market for him before the deadline.
There would likely be some interest in Wilson. After all, he was a top pick last year. There will be front offices and coaching staffs that would like to work with him. Yet, the Raiders probably wouldn’t recoup all that much for Wilson, likely a third-day draft pick.
So, they could opt to just keep him and hope he develops. Yet, the risk is, if he doesn’t stall, his trade market could completely disappear and the Raiders could be forced to release him in a year or so for no compensation.
Wilson hasn’t shown he’s better than fellow backup defensive Janarius Robinson, so if the Raiders decided to remove him from the roster, they might not even miss him.
Also, it’s important to note he was drafted by the previous regime, so new Las Vegas general manager Tom Telesco is not emotionally attached to Wilson like he would be if he made the choice to draft him.
The odds are Wilson will be a Raider on Wednesday and they will remain patient with him. Yet, it wouldn’t be a complete stunner if a trade is made.
