With Brock Purdy out, Brandon Allen was unable to deliver some backup quarterback magic.
The San Francisco 49ers fell to 5-6 on the season after a 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers. With injuries already piling up, the Niners were forced to play without starting quarterback Brock Purdy on Sunday, who is out with a shoulder injury. Turning to backup Brandon Allen, head coach Kyle Shanahan needed the rest of the team to step up and pick up the slack. Instead, a mistake-laden performance, exasperated by some questionable penalties, sunk the 49ers chances.
Check out some of the biggest highlights from the game.
On the first drive of the game, Packers quarterback Jordan Love led a 12-play drive that burned more than seven minutes of regulation. Love capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to tight end Tucker Kraft, who easily found his way to the endzone for an 11-yard score.

While San Francisco struggled with back-to-back three-and-outs, the Packers offense built upon their strong start. A field goal extended the lead to 10-0 before another drive that took nearly seven minutes of regulation ended with a Josh Jacobs touchdown run.

The Niners finally got on the scoreboard in the final minutes of the first half. Finally able to put together a drive without any serious self-inflicted errors, San Francisco marched down the field and Allen tossed a touchdown pass to tight end George Kittle.

Receiving the ball at the start of the second half, the 49ers had a chance to cut their deficit to possession. Star receiver Deebo Samuel went back deep to return the kickoff and seemed to do exactly that, returning all the way to the endzone. However, a controversial holding call against the Niners nixed the score.
A big run by Jordan Mason helped get San Francisco into opposing territory, but they ultimately stalled around the 40. Without massive confidence in kicker Jake Moody, especially in Green Bay’s rough conditions, Shanahan went for it on fourth down. Allen dropped back to pass and sailed a pass to Christian McCaffrey.

The Niners defense was able to step up and get a stop, giving the Niners another chance to make it a one-score game, but this time a downfield pass from Allen was slightly behind Deebo Samuel, bounced off Samuel’s hands, and into the arms of safety Xavier McKinney. The interception would soon result in another Green Bay touchdown and the Packers never looked back.
