The Niners showed some exciting flashes, but ultimately fell short once again.
In a rematch of last season’s NFC title game, the San Francisco 49ers were unable to recreate a victory over the Detroit Lions. Instead, a dominant offensive performance by the Lions alongside a second half collapse by Brock Purdy and kicker Jake Moody’s continued struggles led Detroit to a 41-28 victory.
Here are highlights from the game:
The 49ers got the ball first and started an explosive first half for both offenses. Purdy led his unit down the field, capping off the drive with a touchdown pass to rookie Ricky Pearsall. The rookie first-round pick was one of San Francisco’s biggest standouts.

Not to be outdone, Jared Goff matched Purdy’s efficient start. The Lions matched San Francisco with a touchdown on a misdirection play to Jameson Williams. However, the Niners retained the lead thanks to a blocked extra point by interior defensive lineman Jordan Elliot.

On the following drive, Pearsall made an excellent catch against the sideline to convert a third-and-four and Kittle eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards on the season. Once they got inside the 10-yardline, Purdy found fullback Kyle Juszczyk on a dump off.

The Lions offense quickly responded and drove into 49ers territory. A Nick Bosa sack put them in no man’s land on third-and-12. However, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson called a hook-and-ladder that resulted in a short completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown who quickly tossed the ball to Williams, who sprinted into the endzone.

The 49ers defense was the first unit able to get a stop. Although the Lions were able to get inside the redzone to do it. Lions head coach Dan Campbell went for it on fourth down, and Renardo Green effectively forced an incompletion.
On the heels of the stop, the Niners offense kept chugging along. Already with a pair of touchdown passes, Purdy found his way into the endzone on a scramble inside the red zone. Purdy saw a lane up the middle and effectively used a pump fake to freeze the Lions defenders just enough.

With both quarterbacks putting up video game efficiency numbers, Goff and the Lions started the second half with a 10-play drive that ended in Goff finding tight end Sam LaPorta for a score. Goff completed a pass to Tim Patrick for a successful two-point conversion, tying things up at 21.

The Niners showed no signs of slowing down yet. Another touchdown drive ended in a jet sweep to Deebo Samuel.

While the 49ers continued to have struggles in their own kicking game, with Jake Moody missing a 51 and 58-yard attempt, Lions kicker Jake Bates knocked in a 57-yarder to cut the Lions deficit.
Leading 28-24, the Niners offense finally stumbled. After showing some erratic accuracy earlier on the drive, Purdy airmailed a pass to Pearsall that landed in the arms of Lions safety Kerby Joseph. Detroit didn’t miss the opportunity. Eight plays later, on fourth-and-goal, Goff found St. Brown for a go-ahead score.

The Niners still had a chance, but Purdy misread Joseph and threw another interception, that ensured the final result.
