The 49ers’ issues with injuries during the Kyle Shanahan era are well-documented. Their hopes for a healthier 2022 have already been dashed with major injuries to key starters in each of the first three weeks of the regular season.
Teams are allowed to designate eight players for return from IR, and the 49ers already have four players on that list they expect to get back on the active roster at some point this season.
That eight-player designation and their rash of injuries early in the season have forced San Francisco to be judicious with their IR usage. That’s why TE Tyler Kroft and RB Tyrion Davis-Price have been held off the list despite injuries that will likely keep them out for four-plus weeks. It’s also why they’re trying to avoid placing LT Trent Williams there despite a high ankle sprain.
