On the 50th episode of The Shanaplan, Kyle and I discuss quote from Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s Tuesday press conference ahead of Training Camp.
In today’s episode, Kyle Posey and I react to all the happenings around the 49ers as they prepare for the inaugural practice of the 2021 season on Wednesday morning.
John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan met with the media on Tuesday afternoon. They spoke about a number of topics, ranging from Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo’s competition at quarterback to the injury returns of Dee Ford, Jalen Hurd, and Nick Bosa to the depth along the defensive line.
The most interesting quote that stood out to us was regarding the potential competition at the quarterback spot:
No. Because I just treat it like I would any other situation. Jimmy, going through OTAs, what he’s done, he’s our best quarterback in the building right now. So, he’ll start out training camp that way. And we’ve got three other guys behind him. Now we’re going to give Trey the first chance, obviously, as the backup. And anytime a guy is playing a lot better than the guy in front of them is when you start to split reps up with that team and start to talk about it. Trey has had seven practices with us. And I haven’t seen him for 40 days, so I’m not thinking about that right now. Just having Jimmy going, he’s our starter. And we’re going to give all those guys every opportunity to improve. And if someone ever looks like they give us a better chance to win, we’ll make that decision.
Nobody’s better at providing a fluff answer that also sounds eloquent than Shanahan. He doesn’t necessarily commit to anything but also makes sure to leave himself enough wiggle room for any path. Like Kyle and I discuss in the podcast episode, let’s just let the competition play out, and the cream will rise to the top.

A select group of players also met with the media, from Trent Williams to George Kittle to Jimmie Ward and we also reacted to some of their quotes.
Kyle and I also provided out thoughts on Training Camp and had some predictions for the season as well, as we really start to ramp up.
