The 49ers have addressed the secondary.
Another day full of rumors and hypothetical trades; another day where the San Francisco 49ers don’t entertain any offers. At least, until they got on the clock and made a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to go back one spot and select Florida State Cornerback Renardo Green
The 49ers received the Chiefs fifth-round pick, which is No. 173 overall, in exchange for the Niners sixth-rounder, the No. 211 pick in this draft. Kansas City selected BYU offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia.
Players the 49ers were linked to in the first round that fell to the second, like Kool-Aid McKinstry, Cooper DeJean, Jackson Power-Johnson, and Zach Frazier, were long gone by the time the Niners were on the clock.
One day after selecting a receiver in the first, the 49ers were staring at a couple of offensive line prospects available at No. 63: Cooper Beebe and Christian Haynes were all available.
The Baltimore Ravens selected Roger Rosengarten one pick ahead of the Niners, while Notre Dame’s Blake Fisher went No. 59 overall. Suamataia was the third tackle to go in front of the Niners, making you wonder if teams knew John Lynch was in on a tackle.
That wasn’t the case, or the Niners wouldn’t have traded back. Instead, the 49ers selected Florida State cornerback Renardo Green. He’s 5’11, 186 pounds, and didn’t run overly well at the NFL Combine. Green’s 40 time was in the 46th percentile.
Green played on the outside at Florida State last year, occasionally following a receiver into the slot. His man-to-man cover skills are superb, and the numbers back that up: Green allowed only 51.7 percent of his targets to be completed on 60 targets. But one of his strongest traits is being aggressive in run support. He loves to come up and hit.
He’s on the older side, at 23. Green’s upside might be limited as a fifth-year senior, which explains why he fell.
