Fresh off of yet another superb season and a second trip to the Super Bowl in the last five years, the San Francisco 49ers saw a lot of turnover on their coaching staff and have now announced the replacements.
On Wednesday, the team announced a number of hires and internal promotions. First, Nick Sorenson was internally promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing Steve Wilks, who was dismissed after one year at the helm.
Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was hired as their new assistant head coach and defensive assistant. According to ProFootballTalk, he also interviewed for the defensive coordinator position and is expected to “work closely” with Sorenson.
Former Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi was hired as the team’s senior offensive assistant.
Former linebacker K.J. Wright was hired as a defensive quality control coach.
Cameron Clemmons was named the new assistant offensive line coach.
Lastly, Klay Kubiak was named the assistant quarterbacks coach and passing game specialist, serving in a similar role that his brother Klint Kubiak had with the team last season.
Coaching can make a big difference in the NFL so it will be interesting to see if the 49ers are as good as they were last year with all of these changes – let alone better.
How would you grade these new hires by the 49ers?
