There is a lot riding on Trey Lance’s shoulders. Kyle Shanahan’s tenure as 49ers head coach. John Lynch’s tenure as general manger. Obviously Lance’s tenure at quarterback as well. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the entire future of this franchise hinges on whether or not he can be the player he was drafted to be. It reminds me of my favorite scene in the movie My Cousin Vinny. Yet despite all that pressure, Lance seems to rise to the occasion at every opportunity.
In yesterday’s press conference, he was asked a question about whether he’d find a new place to live now that he’s signed his contract and become a millionaire. Here was his response.
“Yeah, I’m gonna stay where I am. I’m comfortable. Just found a place where I’m feel comfortable and a place that feels like home a little bit. So for me, I spend my time here, so it’s really just a place to sleep.”
That last line really stuck with me. That’s the exact thought process I want the guy responsible for the future of this organization to have. Home is just a place to sleep. That isn’t to say Trey shouldn’t live his life to the fullest, I just like how he’s handled himself this offseason. He lived it up with George Kittle in Vegas last month, and now he’s all business.
And the best part is, those words aren’t just lip service. We’ve all seen numerous videos of Lance working out on the field on social media over the last 40 days.
There’s obviously a long way to go before we’ll know for sure exactly what Lance will be as a player, but so far he’s checked every box that’s been put in front of him.
