Seahawks-Bears Thursday Night Football Open Thread

A loss here would be devastating to the Seahawks

I hope everyone had/is having a good Festivus, Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever you celebrate (if you celebrate) around this time of year. NFL Week 17 kicks off with the Seattle Seahawks traveling to face the Chicago Bears. What links these teams isn’t their game played but the rumors surrounding a familiar face.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was interested in the Chicago Bears head coach vacancy. If you remember, Carroll stepped down as head coach of the Seahawks in 2023. Well, it looks like Carroll wants to return to coaching. The Bears fired Matt Eberflus in November after he helmed an underachieving team.

There’s a lot to like about the Bears job. They have a young quarterback (though his first season was forgettable), an ” okay” defense (well, they should have one, anyway), and potentially top-5 salary cap space. Is Carroll the guy? He’s also going back to USC to teach, so who knows what he has planned. He’s 73 years old, but he still hasn’t shown signs of slowing down.

Regardless, the Seahawks will need a win tonight if they want any chance of ruining the Los Angeles Rams’ claim to the NFC West. A loss tonight all but gives the Rams the West, provided they can beat the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday evening.

The Bears are the only NFC North team not in the playoff hunt. They have given glimpses of a possible bright future, but they are far from making any noise in the league. A lot of this is due to quarterback Caleb Williams’ play. As a rookie, we can’t write him off just yet, but given the “great situation” everyone said he had at the start of the season, he didn’t do much with it. Many of his (and the whole team, for that matter) issues boil down to coaching, but we’ll see if that job is as attractive as possible.

FanDuel Sportsbook has the Seahawks favored by 4.5 points. Take the Seahawks to cover. The Bears have all sorts of issues in and out of the building, and the Seahawks have been embarrassed for the last two weeks in Lumin Field. Though the Rams nearly have this thing wrapped up, the Seahawks won’t go quietly.

The over-under is 41.5. Take the over. Points should abound in this game, and I think the Seahawks will need to score a few touchdowns at the end to inflate their numbers.

The pain is almost over, 49ers fans.
