Brian Griese becomes the 1st 49ers coach of this cycle to receive a head coaching interview
Every offseason, we undergo interviews and consider the possibility of a coach from the San Francisco 49ers staff being poached from another team. It’s happened seemingly every season, from Mike McDaniel and DeMeco Ryans landing head coaching gigs to Klint Kubiak being named the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator last offseason.
Despite a down year, the 49ers received a head coaching request for a positional coach on Black Monday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted the New York Jets requested a head coaching interview with 49ers quarterback coach Brian Griese.
Griese has been with the 49ers organization since 2022. He replaced Rich Scangarello as the quarterbacks coach. It’s been Griese’s only professional coaching job. He had ties to Kyle Shanahan’s dad, Mike, where the Denver Broncos drafted Griese.
New York has put in numerous requests, including Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
The list is unlikely to stop there, so Griese will have some competition during the interview process.
