Brian Griese contemplated leaving coaching in 2023. That decision became official after the 2024 season
On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers announced 14 coaching staff moves, including nine coaches who received new titles. One of those coaches was Mick Lombardi, the Niners’ new quarterbacks coach. Many wondered what happened to Brian Griese, who previously held the same title.
Griese, who had received a head coaching interview from the New York Jets in January and interviewed for the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator job last offseason, seemed to be trending upward and gaining the notoriety you want if you’re trying to climb the coaching ladder in the NFL.
Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Griese decided to step away from coaching. This a year after Griese had considered stepping away from coaching after one season. The previous reason was “weighing family considerations.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the hours that these coaches put in, it’s not far-fetched to say they are in the building or doing something football-related for 12-16 hours a day.
It’s a lot tougher to do when you have a family. Griese has a wife and two kids. If he was thinking about leaving after one season, good for him for sticking 2024 out and walking away from the game that he’s been around all his life. It’s stressful and wears on you.
