Cam Latu gets a fresh start in Cleveland
When the San Francisco 49ers finalized their 53-man roster, they elected to go the veteran route. Jake Tonges was the only other tight end kept besides George Kittle.
The 49ers re-signed Eric Saubert on Wednesday and also brought back Brayden Willis and Mason Pline to the practice squad. Based on their actions, the 49ers needed to see more from former third-round pick Cameron Latu to move forward with him in any capacity.
Latu, who was hurt all last season, had every opportunity to prove himself during training camp and the preseason. But he came up short, time and time again. Drops remained an issue during practice, and it looked like Latu was lost during the games. He wasn’t aggressive as a run blocker, did not find space in the open zones, and did not do enough to convince the coaching staff he was worthy of keeping around.
The 49ers took a chance on a project in the third round, and Latu disappointed for more reasons than one. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reported that Latu will join the Cleveland Browns practice squad, as he’ll get a fresh start to his young career. Best of luck, Cam.
