The former 49ers defensive lineman has a new home.
The San Francisco 49ers made another move along their defensive line, releasing defensive end Leonard Floyd on Tuesday.
Well, Floyd has quickly found a new home, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the veteran is expected to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, heading to his home state. He is signing a one-year, $10 million deal.
Floyd, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the 49ers last offseason, was slated to make $7.9 million in 2025. His release created $1.47 million in cap space for San Francisco.
Floyd’s free agent market was hot, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Teams had inquired about a Floyd trade, but a release allowed him to sign anywhere and he’s headed back to the state of Georgia, where he grew up and attended college from 2013-15.
In 2024, Floyd was second on the 49ers with 8.5 sacks. He’s been both productive and durable over the past few seasons, reaching at least 8.5 sacks since 2020, while playing a full season since 2018.
The 49ers have made quite a few moves along their defensive line this offseason, releasing Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins, and now Leonard Floyd as they presumably look to get cheaper at the position.
While San Francisco won’t have much cap savings from the three releases, they will save a significant amount of cash from the salaries they were going to pay.
