The 49ers will have to deal with Matthew Stafford once again.
A bit of NFC West news now that the Combine is underway: The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford have agreed to a restructured deal. The terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed as of this writing.
If you’re wondering why this is on a San Francisco 49ers site, it’s the Rams (a division rival), it’s their Super Bowl-winning quarterback, and for a moment it seemed like the 49ers would be facing Jimmy Garoppolo in 2025 instead.
While that means the Rams won’t be trading Stafford this year, it’s fair to think they may make a move in the draft to get their quarterback of the future.
Stafford was said to be looking for $50 million per year, which the Rams were unable to pay. Reports said the Rams were offering $40 million, with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants in the mix to land the quarterback via a trade. However, it looks like no trade will happen, and Stafford will stay in the NFC West.
The Rams were reportedly fine with starting Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback for 2025. As a 49ers fan, I would have loved to see him go up against Robert Saleh’s defense. When you think about it, that seemed more like a leverage play, to indicate they were not desperate to hold onto Stafford.
In any case, the 49ers will have to get through Stafford and Sean McVay’s offense if they want any chance of regaining the NFC West crown.
