Prior to his death today, former Hall of Fame running back and convicted felon OJ Simpson was in very poor health due to prostate cancer. But he had been maintaining his public profile on X for many years, and his passing today has caused his final post to go viral.
Taking to X on February 11, 2024, Simpson posted from the city of Las Vegas ahead of Super Bowl LVIII to talk about the game. In the post he said that his “health was good” though he was “dealing with some issues.” He said that he was “just about over it” and predicted he’d be back to golfing soon.
“Hey X world, it’s me yours truly. Boy, what a beautiful day it is here in Las Vegas – even though the game is indoors, it wouldn’t have mattered but still, it’s nice to have a beautiful day like this,” Simpson said. “Let me take a moment to say thank you to all the people who have reached out to me.
“My health is good. I mean, obviously I am dealing with some issues but I think I’m just about over it. I’m back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks. But it was very nice hearing from you and those good positive words. Thank you.
“Now, as far as the game goes, obviously my prediction is not hope. I’m basing it on who is on the field. I see a 24-20 win by the 49ers! That’s not hope, I’m basing that on the quality of players on the football field.”
“Who is going to be MVP? Purdy? McCaffrey? Of course, if Kansas City win it will probably be Patrick Mahomes. But I’m predicting No. 19 (Deebo Samuel) and I’m not talking about Johnny Unitas!”
At the end of the video he added, “God bless, take care and I hope your team win – if your team is the 49ers!”
The post has gotten an uptick in viewers today, rising to 3.2 million with nearly 7,000 likes and over 1,800 comments as of this afternoon.
Simpson played his final two NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers in 1978 and 1979. His third-to last NFL game was also the first start for future NFL icon Joe Montana.
The 49ers went on to lose Super Bowl LVIII in overtime, 25-22. Not too far off the score, but wrong with the final outcome.
