The Dallas Cowboys have hired Nick Sorensen to be their special teams coordinator
The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys will each have new special teams and defensive coordinators in 2025.
Nick Sorensen, one year removed from his first year in the NFL as a defensive coordinator, was hired by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday evening to be their special teams coordinator. Sorensen was in the running for the same position with the 49ers, but they elected to go in a different direction on Monday morning when they hired Brant Boyer.
Kyle Shanahan said he was looking for someone with experience creating game plans. Sorensen, a 10-year NFL veteran, has attended multiple meetings from a player’s perspective but only has one year of experience as a special teams coordinator.
That was in 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. They finished 31st in special teams DVOA, including in the bottom three for field goals and kickoffs. It’s difficult to answer that question in an interview one year after the defense did not improve down the stretch.
But Sorensen gets a fresh start and has arguably the best kicker in the NFL, not to mention an electric returner in KaVontae Turpin. Best of luck to Sorensen. We’ll track his progress and compare each special team’s unit to how Boyer looks with the 49ers.
Sorensen joins Brian Schottenheimer, who was named the Cowboys coach recently. Sorensen and Schottenheimer worked together in Seattle when Sorensen was the secondary coach. So, there will be familiarity in Dallas.
