Cheryl Bosa has not been shy about wanting to see her boys play together. Now, she gets her chance.
The Los Angeles Chargers released edge rusher Joey Bosa before his roster bonus of $12.36 million was due next Wednesday. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said the early trigger was part of a restructuring last year, which is why Bosa was released before free agency. That sounds a lot like the situation of former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
The move saves the Chargers $25.36 million. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that Bosa will have options, including joining his brother Nick in the Bay Area.

Joey only played 432 snaps last season for Los Angeles. In 2023, that number dropped to 306. In 2022, Joey played 156 snaps. The year 2021 was the last time he played double-digit games. Joey, who turns 30 in July, would likely fill the role of Leonard Floyd. Of course, the 49ers would need to release Floyd and get Bosa to agree to a veteran minimum contract.
If he’d be willing to sign for the minimum, you’d think Kyle Shanahan and the Niners would welcome Nick’s brother to the Bay Area with open arms. The 49ers could also beef Bosa’s contract up with incentives and per-game roster bonuses that would entice him to sign outside of family reasons and staying in California.
Despite playing 64 fewer snaps than Floyd in 2024, Bosa had more quarterback hits and knockdowns than Floyd did. Bosa finished 29th in winning percentage as a pass rusher. In the same range as Josh Sweat, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, and Khalil Mack. Those are names that you want to be associated with. It was also higher than T.J. Watt and Maxx Crosby. So, it’s clear he can still produce.
Do you think the 49ers should pursue Bosa, stay away due to his age and injury history, and continue with a youth movement? Presumably, the 49ers could sign Bosa and draft an edge rusher, as the depth is still lacking, and San Francisco could use multiple bodies on the edge.
