The San Francisco 49ers dealt with a crazy number of injuries last year. Few were as impactful as the absence of star defensive end Nick Bosa.
During Week 2 of the 2020 season, Bosa went down with a torn ACL. In 2019, the younger Bosa brother had 47 tackles and nine sacks in the regular season, and added another 15 tackles and four sacks in the team’s run to the Super Bowl. He quickly established himself as one of the best young pass rushers in the NFL, earning a Pro Bowl nod and winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
His jump to true superstardom may be a year behind schedule, but by all accounts Bosa is doing well in his recovery. He spoke to the media about where things stand from 49ers training camp today.
“I looked at the schedule but I knew when it was an early injury, I for the most part would be ready to go for Week 1,” Bosa said, via Cam Inman of The Mercury News. “And everything now is trending toward that. I’m hoping to ramp it up toward that and give it all I’ve got Week 1.”

The San Francisco 49ers are a fascinating team to watch this year. Just a season removed from a dominant run to the NFC Championship and appearance in the Super Bowl, the team is clearly build to win now. However, they still have eyes on the future as well.
The team made an aggressive move to trade up to No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft, where they took North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, one of the most intriguing quarterback prospects in a long time. Early returns have been good, though it sounds likely that veteran Jimmy Garoppolo will likely start the year.
Nick Bosa’s return, if all continues according to plan, should come in Week 1 at the Detroit Lions at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.
