For the fourth time in four years, former No. 10 overall pick Josh Rosen will be searching for a new NFL team.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the San Fransisco 49ers plan to waive the 24-year-old Rosen on Tuesday. The former UCLA quarterback was struggling to get reps in practice and ultimately slipped too far down the depth chart for Kyle Shanahan and the rest of the Niners coaching staff to justify keeping him.
Rosen did play quite a bit in San Fransisco’s first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He ended his outing 10-for-15, throwing for 93 yards and one interception.
The performance clearly wasn’t enough to solidify a place on the 49ers roster. Shanahan and his staff will instead go forward at quarterback with Jimmy Garappolo, rookie Trey Lance and veteran back-up Nate Sudfeld.
The #49ers are waiving QB Josh Rosen, source says. Rosen mentioned recently he wasn’t getting enough reps in practice. A chance to latch on elsewhere for the rest of camp now.

Rosen was once regarded as one of the most talented quarterbacks in a stacked draft class back in 2018. After a few strong seasons at UCLA, many thought that he could thrive at the NFL level.
However, Rosen hasn’t quite gotten the opportunity to see the field much as a pro. Now, the NFL world isn’t sure what to make of the 24-year-old’s future in football.
Confirmed. Josh Rosen was informed of his release. He did not take a snap at practice either of the past two days. https://t.co/SBawOaKtyx

Stark reminder as to how difficult scouting draft prospects is — Rosen was the most universally liked QB prospect during the ’18 process. Now looking for his 5th team in four years. https://t.co/bUEFqCYfDq

Rosen didn’t have an awesome training camp, IMO. https://t.co/bQxk0lMopz

Feels like yesterday that many a Bills fan was irate the team selected Josh Allen instead of this guy. https://t.co/Q0V7W9XNFx

Going into his fourth year, now about to be on his fifth team. Massive draft miss for me… https://t.co/TJ6ZKrRANo

Although there’s an air of skepticism surrounding Rosen, a few NFL fans still seem hopeful that he can land into a situation that compliments his talents. A few media members named some potential teams that could benefit the former 49ers quarterback on Tuesday.
I need to move on from Rosen at some point, but…
Detroit would’ve be a good landing spot for him if not for them signing Ta’amu today. https://t.co/Ijrn5bAVk9

McCarthy probably wouldn’t, but I’d bring him in to take reps > The Nooch while Dak is on a pitch count. https://t.co/holIps4GPT

I’d love to see Rosen resurface in LA with the Rams. Learn under Stafford and McVay, hopefully resurrect his career. https://t.co/NDf7vNFiVl

Rosen will be looking for his fifth team in just four years after coming into the league in 2018. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals and lasted just one year before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins. He was waived the following summer before brief stints on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 49ers in 2020.
In 20 games played, Rosen has completed 54.8 percent of his passes for 2,845 yards, 12 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He’s posted a 3-13 record as a starter.
