The expectation around the NFL is that 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans will become the next head coach of the Texans. That’ll leave the NFC West champions with a massive hole on their coaching staff.
That being said, the 49ers have wasted no time zeroing in on a potential replacement for Ryans.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the 49ers requested permission to speak with former Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks.
Wilks didn’t receive the full-time job in Carolina. However, he’s still under contract with the Panthers.
Fans around the country are hoping Wilks lands the gig in San Francisco.
“I’d love this for him,” one person tweeted.
Another person said, “He would be a amazing hire, I highly recommend the 49ers to give him the job.”
“Good for the Niners,” a fan responded to the news.
Wilks had a 6-6 record as the interim coach of the Panthers this season. Many people thought he should’ve been named the team’s head coach this offseason.
If the 49ers replace Ryans with Wilks, that would be an outstanding move on paper.
