Trey Lance entered the 2022 season as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback.
However, a season-ending ankle injury suffered in Week 2 ruined any plans of a breakout campaign. Since then, Lance has undergone two surgeries on his ankle, but is making solid progress.
The 2021 first-round pick told reporters on Tuesday that he is a few weeks away from being cleared to practice and will be back to 100 percent for OTAs in late spring.
Lance is still quite inexperienced at the NFL level, but news of him getting closer to full strength is encouraging for many Niners supporters.
“I’m still on board the Trey as QB1 train. Purdy did amazing and super thankful he got us far, but we’ve yet to see Trey at even half his potential,” said one 49ers fan. “Just start the damn kid and see how far he takes us. He needs that experience now and we can create our own ‘SB Window’ with him.”
“The #49ers current QB1 should be fully healthy for the entirety of the offseason program. Great sign for Trey Lance,” said 49ers WebZone’s Ronan Chakravarthi.
“How SF handles Lance/Purdy this off-season will be interesting. I know Purdy impressed this season but Lance’s ceiling is still considerably higher IMO,” said 247Sports’ Aaron Leming.
“It’s sink or swim time for him. Excited to see what he can do this time,” another fan added.
Assuming Jimmy Garoppolo leaves in free agency as expected, Lance and Brock Purdy are the only two quarterbacks on San Francisco’s roster for next season.
We’ll see if they trust in what they have with the both of them rather than going out and acquiring a veteran.
