Johnson played his entire 16-year career with the 49ers and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a first-round pick out of UCLA in 1961 and remained with the team until the end of the 1976 season.
During that time, he appeared in 213 games and was a three-time All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler. He also was a member of the All-Decade team in the 1970s.
He finished his career with 47 interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He also compiled seven fumble recoveries and a safety.
The 49ers later retired his No. 37 jersey since he’s one of the greatest players in franchise history.
Our thoughts are with Johnson’s family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.
