49ers HC Kyle Shanahan provided updates about LB Dre Greenlaw, S Talanoa Hufanga, and why he’s excited about Isaac Guerendo’s opportunity
The San Francisco 49ers returned to practice Wednesday. The following players did not practice:
LG Aaron Banks (concussion)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)
RB Jordan Mason (ankle)
DE Nick Bosa (hip/oblique)
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee)
CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee)
These players were limited:
CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee)
LB Dre Greenlaw (Achilles)
S Talanoa Hufanga (wrist)
Head coach Kyle Shanahan says “He most likely will later” when referencing Mason going on the Injured Reserve List. Until then, Mason will remain on the injury report.
Hufanga is wearing a club similar to Jimmie Ward’s from a couple of years back.
The 49ers have not decided when Greenlaw will make his season debut: “We’ll see how this week goes, but most likely Rams, hopefully.” San Francisco plays Los Angeles in a pivotal divisional matchup a week from Thursday.
You have to wonder if they can get by without Williams and Bosa for another week before their two best players return next Thursday night.
It’ll also be interesting to see how rookie running back Isaac Guerendo fares on a short week with a potentially heavy workload. Shanahan believes Guerendo is ready for what’s ahead:
“I think he is ready to go. We were excited about, he got off to a late start with injuries in preseason. I thought he finished in those games well, especially that kick return he had versus the Raiders, I think. Did some decent things when he started out, didn’t get a lot of carries, had some ups and downs but got better through everything. And then when he got the bulk of the carries, I want to say some more versus Seattle, he only got better and he’s gotten better throughout the year. So I think he’s ready for this.”
Ricky Pearsall hasn’t had a reception in the previous three games. Shanahan said, “Ricky got a little banged up in Green Bay, battled through a lot, still was able to play a lot through it.” Pearsall hasn’t been listed on the injury report.
Quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott were full-go during practice.
