Although San Francisco 49ers rookie Trey Lance isn’t expected to start the team’s season opener in less than two weeks, he needs as much time to prepare for the season as possible.
Unfortunate, Lance has come down with a minor injury that will force him to miss some time. On Monday, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Lance sustained a small “chip” in his finger and will miss about a week.
Apparently, Lance picked up the injury in San Francisco’s preseason finale this past weekend. He and Jimmy Garoppolo both got plenty of work in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Lance should be back in time for the 49ers’ Week 1 match-up against the Detroit Lions, but the finger ailment may set him back in the team’s ongoing quarterback competition. The No. 3 overall pick has been trying to get past Garoppolo during the preseason, but hasn’t quite earned the starting gig just yet.
If Lance is set to miss a handful of days during the final week and a half of preparation, Shanahan probably won’t risk trotting him out on the field in Week 1.

To be fair, the 49ers hinted long before news of the Lance injury that the job is Garoppolo’s. The 29-year-old has impressed throughout camp and is reportedly healthy, which bodes well for his first regular season appearance since last November.
Although Garoppolo is performing well, it’s only a matter of time before Lance puts serious pressure on him for the starting job. The former North Dakota State star has won over some key supporters in San Fransisco, who may have need of him before the season is out.
In the meantime, Lance will focus on getting healthy and developing his skillset before he tries to take over for the 49ers at quarterback
