While most of the NFLs head coaches and front office brass descend on Indianapolis for the 2022 NFL draft combine, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will not be among that group.
He’s one of six coaches who appear not to be joining the festivities at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy. Shanahan’s name was not on the list of interviews set to take place during the combine. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Rams’ Sean McVay, Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, Ravens’ John Harbaugh and Panthers’ Matt Rhule also appear to be missing this portion of pre-draft workouts.
49ers general manager John Lynch will be among those at the combine though. His press conference is scheduled for 11:15 am Pacific Time on Wednesday.
Shanahan’s absence isn’t a huge deal for a couple reasons. Most of all there’s not a ton to glean from the combine for a head coach. Other coaches and front office members can watch the workouts and conduct the meetings. There’s probably more Shanahan can accomplish by watching film at home. He could also attend pro days where some players will be working out for the first time after skipping some or all of the combine, and he’ll still get to meet with players the team brings in for workouts and meetings.
