Josh Dobbs signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots
The San Francisco 49ers will have at least one new backup quarterback in 2025. Josh Dobbs signed a two-year deal with the New England Patriots. Dobbs will go from backing up Brock Purdy to former first-round pick Drake Maye, who has a sky-high ceiling.
In a best scenario, Dobbs wouldn’t have attempted one pass in 2024. But that wasn’t the case, as Dobbs thew 47 passes. In most 49ers fans’ minds, Dobbs should have thrown at least 50 more than that had he started for Brandon Allen.
Many will cite the fairy tale story from 2023, when Dobbs went on a mini-winning streak with the Minnesota Vikings before being benched, and assume the 49ers would have had similar results.
The truth is, San Francisco was a six-win team with limited options at Lambeau Field. It would have been difficult for Purdy to lead the 49ers to a win that game, let alone Dobbs.
Unless Brandon Allen re-signs, Purdy and Tanner Mordecai are the only options on the roster. Unless the 49ers turn their attention to one of the most popular quarterbacks in the sport.
