49ers GM John Lynch also seems like he’s confident a breakthrough with Trent Williams is on the horizon
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch didn’t have any new updates regarding Trent Williams, although he did say that there’s been good communication and both sides are constantly working and throwing out ideas to try to have a breakthrough.
The tone when Lynch speaks about Williams is different from the one he uses when he’s talking about Brandon Aiyuk. When it comes to the All-Pro left tackle, it’s as if Lynch can see the finish line. But for the budding wide receiver, it’s almost like Lynch wants Aiyuk to make a decision already.
Lynch believes a resolution for Williams is imminent:
“The Trent situation, things come up. And this has come up. Trent is a fantastic player. He’s a tremendous leader on this team. I will never fall short on my praise of Trent and what he’s meant to this place. It was a great day, when I got that call from [former NFL head coach Ron] Rivera saying that they would do that trade. He’s been incredible since he’s been here. We value Trent, we love Trent, we want Trent here. And I’m hopeful that can happen soon.”
Talks have been ongoing with Aiyuk as well, although there hasn’t been a breakthrough there yet, either. Lynch envisioned a potential situation arising with Aiyuk, but never a standoff:
“I don’t know that I saw the standoff with Brandon. I saw a situation that we were going to have to deal with and man, we’ve been trying for a long time. We don’t get paid to try. We get paid to do. And I’ll take accountability for anything that hasn’t happened. But I won’t stop continuing to fight to find the best resolution, whatever that may be.”
Lynch taking accountability is what you want to hear. But there are subtle digs. Later on during his presser, John said, “It’s a fun place for receivers to thrive, and whatever your best is, I think you’ll find it here,” when asked about Terrace Marshall.
At the Players for Purpose event Wednesday evening, Lynch said, “There’s been a lot of talk this training camp of who we don’t have here, we’ll take care of that business. I’m focused on who we do have here,” and went on to mention “Deebo” first.
This feels like a “who will blink first” situation as Week 1 quickly approaches. Ideally, all of this is water under the bridge a week from now while Aiyuk and Williams are suited up as the 49ers prepare for the New York Jets.
