The San Francisco 49ers may lose a member of their front office in the offseason.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday reported the Jacksonville Jaguars requested to interview 49ers director of scouting and football operations Josh Williams for their general manager opening. The Jaguars are on the hunt for a new GM after firing Trent Baalke this offseason.
Williams has been in San Francisco for 14 seasons in various roles in the scouting department. He joined the club in 2011 as an assistant in the scouting department, and worked his way up through the ranks before being promoted to his current position before last season.
In 2013 he moved up to pro personnel scout, and he stayed in that spot until 2016 when he was the 49ers’ National Football Scouting representative. From 2017-21 he was an area scout. He became a national scout in 2022, and held that position until his promotion last year.
Williams’s job as the scouting and football operations director includes various duties. He “directs pro and college scouting efforts, supports player development, and assists in contract negotiations,” according to the 49ers website.
If he’s hired by Jacksonville, the 49ers would receive an additional third-round compensatory pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
Finding a person to replace someone as experienced as Williams may not be easy for a 49ers front office that underwent some significant changes last offseason when Adam Peters left to take the general manager job with the Washington Commanders. They’ve already had multiple coordinator searches this offseason, but it’s likely Williams’ spot would be filled via internal promotion.
