Kyle Shanahan talked through the process of practicing in the rain and with a wet ball.
There’s a 50 percent chance of rain Sunday in Philadelphia, as of writing. Shanahan would prefer that it doesn’t rain while the team practices this week, so the 49ers can continue to practice outdoors.
Here’s Kyle on Brock Purdy’s preparation might change with precipitation in the forecast:
“No, a wet ball makes it harder on everybody. I’ve had some guys who really struggle in the rain. I’ve been through some situations with Brock, not just the game but practice. But I think he’s as good as any quarterback I’ve had in the rain.
He’s dealt with it a lot at Iowa State. I don’t think there’s much practicing in rain. It doesn’t get less slippery. So, we’ll just try to have an efficient one today and deal with it Sunday.”
Shanahan added that he doesn’t make his quarterbacks practice with a wet ball since the ball is generally sweaty from the players.
Purdy doesn’t exactly have an extensive history of playing in the rain at Iowa State. In a couple of instances, Purdy and the Cyclones’ offense dealt with what you’d describe as light mist or a drizzle.
Purdy played in one true “slop fest” back in 2018 against Drake University. It was one of those games where the ponchos were out in the stands, players were covered in mud due to the weather, and it looked like a foggy game on TV. Purdy went 15-for-22 for 153 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled for a touchdown run.
