49ers’ Bosa bros union has best chance after Chargers release Joey
“They never played together in Ohio State, but it’s always been in the backs of their minds that they could someday play together in the NFL.
Joey Bosa’s career has been limited by injuries, leading to the Chargers’ decision to part ways with him at this stage.
This development represents the first true opportunity for the Bosa brothers to play together since high school.”
Schefter: Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga likely to leave 49ers
“Schefter said. “… They’re going to lose talent in free agency. Talanoa Hufanga is going to be gone. Dre Greenlaw, I think, is going to be gone.
“They’re going to lose a lot of talent in free agency. They’re going to have to make cuts here to get under the salary cap in the coming week.”
49ers could face difficult roster decisions with five veteran players
“The 49ers decided to make this move with Hargrave after he sustained a season-ending torn triceps in Week 3.
His contract voids, and the 49ers could re-sign him. However, Lynch suggested that will be difficult because the 49ers expect Hargrave will secure a big contract elsewhere. Hargrave’s departure will not benefit the 49ers on the compensatory formula.”
Would 49ers really risk a Brock Purdy holdout by not reaching a contract extension? (paywall)
“It’s possible Lynch’s comments last week were just standard contract posturing. If not, they foreshadowed another round of 49ers’ contract hardball: Why would Lynch, without prompting, invoke the 49ers’ leverage at the start of negotiations with a quarterback who has provided the franchise with so much while earning relatively little in the past three seasons?”
“Regardless of what happens with their top free agents, the 49ers have needs all over the roster to address.
The offensive and defensive lines top the list, but another linebacker, cornerback and wide receiver will also be priorities. And there is no backup quarterback with NFL game experience under contract. More help at running back could be necessary, too, depending on what happens with Mason, whom the team plans to tender but is still deciding which designation to use.”
Why Missouri tackle Membou could be 49ers’ eventual Williams successor
“Membou mostly played right tackle at Missouri, so it remains to be seen if he eventually could play left tackle in the NFL. And some teams might view Membou more as a guard at the next level.
Regardless, Membou is a rare combination of size (6-foot-4, 332 pounds) and athleticism. His height is not ideal for an NFL offensive tackle, but he stacks up in every other way.
“I think most teams think I’m athletically capable enough to play tackle, but it just depends on what their needs are,” Membou said.
Toward the end of the combine, the NFL Network flashed a graphic on the screen. Since 2003, only three offensive linemen have weighed 315 or more at the combine, had a vertical leap of at least 30 inches and ran a time of sub-5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Two of those players participated in this year’s combine: Membou and LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell. The others were Tristan Wirfs, whom the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL last year, and . . . you guessed it, Williams.”
Sherman: Deebo Samuel trade could benefit George Kittle, other 49ers playmakers
““I think this is sometimes addition by subtraction, just kind of simplifying,” Sherman concluded. “Hey, I don’t have to give the ball to all these guys anymore. I can just run the offense more straightforward.”
