Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Thursday, December 5th, 2024
“Their first practice report of the week had a handful of good news with linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga both appearing as limited participants. Greenlaw is returning from a torn Achilles he suffered in the Super Bowl. He had his 21-day practice window opened last week in hopes he’ll be able to return from the PUP list in time to play in 2024.
Hufanga hurt his wrist in Week 5 and went on IR. He had his 21-day practice window opened and also appeared as a limited participant.”
“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s practice as the team prepares for its Week 14 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Here’s everything he said.”
49ers will get a peek into the future Sunday when Isaac Guerendo starts at RB (paywall)
“If you’ve got the right stuff, the more you get reps, the more you can adjust — how hard you’ve got to hit (holes), how quick those holes close, how when there is a hole how you have to hit it full speed and can’t hesitate at all or it closes like that,” Shanahan said. “We’ve seen that stuff get better in practice and we’ve seen it carry over into games.”
Meanwhile, the running back the 49ers signed on Tuesday, Israel Abanikanda, also has no NFL starts.
Abanikanda, 22, said Wednesday he thought the 49ers might draft him in 2023. Not only do they use the zone-running system he played at Pitt, he got a barrage of phone calls from running backs coach Bobby Turner that April.
“Oh yeah — me and him had a good connection before the draft,” Abanikanda said in front of his new locker.”
What 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey’s prognosis looks like after ‘textbook’ PCL tear (paywall)
“That Shanahan said the 49ers don’t think McCaffrey needs surgery suggests that it’s a partial, not a complete, tear of the PCL. If he were treating someone with a similar injury, Rothenberg said he’d put that patient in a special brace immediately.
“And I would get him started in physical therapy right away to work on range of motion and strengthening, particularly of the quadriceps tendon and muscle,” he said. “And just monitor him very closely…..”
Rothenberg said there shouldn’t be any long-term issues with the injury. McCaffrey should be fine when the 49ers’ offseason program begins in the spring.”
49ers’ De’Vondre Campbell furious with Bills’ Mack Hollins for yanking dreadlocks (paywall)
“It’s happened before, but not intentionally like that,” Campbell said to the Chronicle. “He did that s— on purpose. He can’t tell me he didn’t. It’s all good, though. We’re going to cross paths one day in the real world.”
