Your daily San Francisco 49ers news for Wednesday, November 6th, 2024
“He had a 9.83 (out of 10) Relative Athletic Score coming out of Nebraska in 2020 and has been a rotation player.
That said, the tape shows an inconsistent player who often plays with a poor pad level. He has substantial strength and had one great game of shooting gaps with burst against the Patriots, but he’s been otherwise a mediocre player. That athleticism hasn’t matched with technique to this point, though he does have far more experience and power than some of the 49ers’ other options. It’s not clear that he’s going to be a significant addition in the run game, which is where the 49ers needed major help.
If you care about Pro Football Focus’ grades (they are poor at accounting for assignment and scheme in my opinion), he has a below-average 53.5 grade on the year (91 out of 134 qualified DTs) with a 51.6 run defense grade (78 out of 134 DTs) and 56.6 pass rush grade (100 out of 134). There’s a reason the Texans, helmed by DeMeco Ryans and in a mediocre spot at defensive tackle, traded him.”
Why 49ers made Davis trade, a value acquisition, over big-time move
“In a lot of ways, the 49ers’ success in the 2024 NFL Draft could have proved the value of holding onto their selections.”
49ers’ latest roster move signals kicker Moody’s return from injury
“I’m slowly owning my way back to on-the-field stuff,” Moody said. “I’m just progressing, making sure I’m doing all the steps needed, not rushing straight back into it, just taking one step at a time.”
Baldy offers honest assessment of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan in season’s first half
“I bet this thing has been really tough on him,” Baldinger said. “You make the change at defense coordinator (with Nick Sorensen), but the defensive line isn’t what it once was, as far as just talent. And now, you want this defense coordinator just to fix things, and you’re playing all these rookies in the secondary right now. I think it’s been a tough year on him.”
Baldinger points out that the 49ers struggled last year before the bye week but surged in the second half of the season, leaving room for hope that this year’s squad could experience a similar turnaround.
“That’s what I’m looking for right now,” Baldinger continued. “I think they’re in a position right here, the schedule is going to remain tough. Obviously, the division is only going to get tougher the way Arizona is playing and the way the Rams are playing right now. So you’re going to have a lot of tough division games.
“But I just think it’s been stressful for Kyle. We’ve seen a lot of teams just go in the tank and just basically fall apart after Super Bowl losses. They’re still right in the middle of it. Probably not with the record that you expect the 49ers to have, but considering all the stuff that has happened, the fact that they’re still relevant, big game this weekend on the road, got a lot of work yet to do, I’d say that.”
