49ers ‘embarrassed’ in 28-point loss, their worst against Packers
“Despite their many issues, the Niners are fortunate to be in the messy NFC West, where they sit just a game behind the top teams in the division despite being under .500 at the latest point in a season since 2018.
Following previous losses, the Niners have pointed out that plenty of time has remained to right the ship. But the clock is ticking, and Sunday’s performance did nothing to offer hope that answers are coming soon.
“We all share a bad feeling right now,” San Francisco guard Dominick Puni said. “We’ve got to get back to next week. A big game against the Bills on Sunday night. We’ve got to go.”
“There isn’t all that much positive to take from this game. The young safeties in Brown and Malik Mustapha played well (Renardo Green didn’t). So, too, did Brandon Allen.
There was a lot of criticism of Kyle Shanahan for starting Allen over Josh Dobbs. It’s understandable, because Allen fumbled on his first drive and didn’t exactly look like a dynamo.
But Shanahan trusts Allen because he knows the offense, and if we’re being honest, he was kind of slinging it Sunday. It’s a question of trusting your scheme versus trusting the roulette wheel spin that is Josh Dobbs, a man who struggled massively to get play calls in in training camp.
Allen was not the problem. And that might be meaningful if (as may be the case) Brock Purdy does not play next week.”
Fred Warner: 49ers weren’t prepared for Green Bay’s first-half rushing attack (paywall)
“I think they presented some different run looks that we didn’t prepare for in the first half,” Warner said. “We adjusted as the game went on, which was helpful. But we have to be better from the jump.”
49ers fall apart in blowout loss to Packers: ‘The worst I’ve been a part of’ (paywall)
“The best thing the 49ers have going for them right now is their mediocre division. The Seahawks’ win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday means that, as second-rate as they’ve been the last two weeks, the 49ers are still one game behind the NFC West leaders.
Still, Sunday’s loss certainly had a bad feel to it — as if a team that had been merely treading water for 10 weeks finally slipped beneath the surface.”
The 49ers’ season is all but lost. Here’s how they can build a bridge to 2025
“Shanahan has avoided running youngsters out there until he was confident they wouldn’t screw up a playoff run, but, well, there’s not that much to screw up these days.
The last time the 49ers went through a malaise year, not coincidentally, was the season following their previous Super Bowl trip in February 2020. That’s when Bosa, Garoppolo, Kittle, and others all missed significant time.
What snapped them out of that funk the next season? Their stars showed up in 2021 after a slow start, but also younger players like Warner, Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, and Elijah Mitchell really stepped forward. I don’t know if the 49ers have that kind of young cadre this time around, but they’ve got some possibilities. And it would be good for the 49ers to start really finding out now.”
Shanahan explains his outburst after 49ers’ penalties vs. Packers
“The Packers snapped the ball before the 12th defensive player could get to the sideline, in essence, giving quarterback Jordan Love a free play.
“They didn’t give us time to sub on that, and that’s why I was upset on that,” Shanahan said. “And then the next one, because they got away with the first one, they tried to do it again the next play.”
Love ended up throwing into the end zone, where San Francisco safety Malik Mustapha made the interception. Offsetting penalties nullified the 49ers’ takeaway.
Shanahan was upset and made his objection known to Wrolstad.
Then, San Francisco’s defensive coaches did not get the proper substitutions for the next play. The 49ers were called for another penalty for having 12 men on the field.
“I was out there screaming the whole time, so I’m not exactly aware of what happened with the 12 guys,” Shanahan said. “But obviously we had 12 guys out there. They gave us time to sub, and we didn’t get one off. So the second one was on us.”
