It’s over. No more training camp stats that are meaningless. Thankfully, the 49ers escaped the preseason without any major injuries. I thought the team had a confident aura after the game. They seemed loose and could tell they were confident in their abilities.
Two weeks.
Jimmy G sees benefit of sharing snaps with Lance in 49ers’ win
“It’s tough for defenses to handle that. I’ve never been in that situation but just seeing it firsthand today, it’s hard on them.”
“Whatever’s best for the team, I’m here for it,” Garoppolo said. “It’s just one of those things, whatever’s best for the team, you got to get behind that and be part of that, and I think that makes for you being the best player you can be, too.
“It’s all tied together. We’re all in this thing together. We’ll see where it goes.”
The Good and the Not So Good from the 49ers’ Preseason Win over the Raiders
THE GOOD
1. Running back Raheem Mostert.
Was by far the best player on the 49ers offense during its first drive of the game, when he ran 7 times for 53 yards (7.6 yards per carry). If Mostert can pick up where he left off in 2019, the 49ers will have a fabulous starting running back.
2. Running back Trey Sermon.
Ran 7 times for 37 yards (5.3 per carry), and seemed to make at least one tackler miss every time he touched the ball. Sermon is incredibly quick for a big, bruising running back. He looks like he could be a starter.
3. Running back JaMycal Hasty.
Ran 6 times for 55 yards (9.2 per carry), and scored two rushing touchdowns. Before the game, Hasty seemed like he probably wouldn’t make the 53-man roster. Now, it seems like the 49ers have to keep him. He’s too good to cut.
Final 49ers 53-man roster projection: Jalen Hurd, Jaquiski Tartt pass final exam
Sunday marked the Hurd crash test. Shanahan heavily featured the wideout for the first time after Hurd missed his first two seasons with back and knee injuries, respectively. The 49ers targeted Hurd six times. He caught four passes for 25 yards and even ran once for 2 yards. Hurd also dropped two passes from Lance: One was a bullet that snuck over coverage and clanged against his facemask and the other was a bit low but definitely catchable.
Still, Shanahan emphasized during the week that Hurd needed to prove his availability — not his ability. The 49ers consider a healthy Hurd to be one of their top six receivers, and it looks like he’s in line to make the roster if his body holds up well from that test over the next 36 hours.
“I’d consider his day a success,” Shanahan said of Hurd, who played about 25 snaps.
Raheem Mostert excited to play vs. Raiders, hopes 49ers carry momentum into Week 1
“They’ve got to make decisions this coming Tuesday, and it’s going to be tough,” Mostert said. “All the running backs in the room, from me all the way down to the rookies and stuff, Wayne Gallman, everybody, just doing their part. And we’re all just happy and fortunate enough to have each other’s back.”
Added Mostert: “See you in Detroit. Go Niners.”
49ers observations: Dual-QB threat on display in win vs. Raiders
If Tartt is healthy, he’s the front-runner. But is he healthy?
Tartt registered a team-high five tackles, and if he checks out OK physically on Monday, he should get the call as the starter for Week 1 against the Lions.
If not, the 49ers have three other options: Veterans Tavon Wilson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and rookie Talanoa Hufanga.
Hufanga is guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster, as either the starter or a core special-teams player. Clinton-Dix and Wilson will face uncertainty on cut-down day. Clinton-Dix and Wilson played together in the second half.
