49ers mock draft reaction: Derrick Harmon’s a great fit, but is there a tackle to pursue? (paywall)
“He plays D-end at times, he plays three-technique,” Brugler said in a phone interview. “He’s both quick and he’s strong. He’s on the ball carrier a lot more quickly than I think the ball carrier expects.”
The 49ers like defensive linemen who can play multiple spots the way Arden Key, Charles Omenihu and, this year, Yetur Gross-Matos have done. And they’ve had great success with Duck defenseman, from Arik Armstead to DeForest Buckner to Deommodore Lenoir.
My question is, what else could the 49ers get if they ended up at, or around, pick No. 14?
The team has been very choosey when it comes to offensive tackles, for example. The last time they took one in the first round was 2018 when Mike McGlinchey went No. 9 overall. At pick No. 14, the 49ers certainly would be within striking distance of one of the top tackles in this year’s class. Brugler, for example, has the Chicago Bears taking Texas’ Kelvin Banks Jr. three spots earlier. (More on him and the tackle class below).”
“Suffice to say, he has embraced the outside zone credo “slow to, quick through,” which means to be patient in the backfield but once you see the hole to hit it as hard and fast as possible.
“I think that’s one of those things that just comes with reps,” Guerendo said. “The more reps you get, the more you get the feel for it and the more I’ve gotten, I think I’ve caught onto that. So that’s something that’s helped me and will continue to help me.”
If Guerendo can stay healthy, the next five games should provide plenty of those much-needed reps. In many ways, Guerendo is still a bit of a running back neophyte.
Before he arrived at the University of Wisconsin as a freshman, Guerendo hadn’t played running back since he held the job for his fourth-grade peewee team. After switching from receiver to running back in Madison, he started one game in the backfield in five seasons split between Wisconsin and Louisville.”
Bosa doubtful, Williams out for 49ers’ Sunday game vs. Bears
“He is listed as doubtful to face the Bears at Levi’s Stadium due to injuries to the hip and oblique muscles on both sides. Bosa likely will miss his third consecutive game.”
Barrows: 49ers have a personnel issue on defense, not a Nick Sorensen issue (paywall)
“Shanahan certainly will have options at season’s end, though it’s hard to fault Sorensen for what’s been happening in recent weeks. Saleh, Ulbrich and even Fangio would have a hard time stopping anyone with the group the 49ers have been forced to field.”
Kyle Shanahan, Brock Purdy share final updates ahead of 49ers-Bears Week 14 matchup
“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy spoke with reporters after Friday’s practice as the team prepares for its Week 14 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Here’s everything they said.”
49ers’ O-line coach will join ‘My Cause, My Cleats’ to honor late wife (paywall)
“Foerster, 63, began his weekly news conference by telling reporters that he’d be wearing cleats in honor of his wife when the 49ers host the Bears on Sunday. It is part of the NFL’s annual “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign in which players and coaches can wear customized cleats to recognize their support for charitable causes.
Foerster became emotional when discussing his wife, who was a nurse and mother of three. Her funeral was held five days after the Super Bowl.
“The one thing she wanted to have said — and this is a good opportunity for me to say this — she didn’t lose a battle,” Foerster said. “She was diagnosed and given six months to live in 2018. And she ended up living six years. And everyone that’s in this battle every single day, we stand up for that cause. … She didn’t lose the battle. She fought a good fight. She gave us all six years and I proudly wear (the cleats) for the cause.”
Foerster’s cleats will recognize the Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation. The 49ers will have 34 players who will wear customized cleats Sunday. Nine coaches and staff members also are participating in the campaign.”
“The Bears play a lot of close games and lose a lot of them. Yep, sounds familiar. The 49ers don’t have a lot of juice or healthy stars these days, but if they keep Williams from making too many big plays and are able to run the ball, they should win this one.”
Five 49ers to watch in must-win NFC game vs. Bears in Week 14
“He made his first start of the season last week against the Buffalo Bills with left guard Aaron Banks out of action with a concussion.
“I was impressed by him,” Shanahan said. “I know he’s got a lot of ability and we’ve enjoyed working with him here. But that was our first time going into a game with him. I loved how he competed. I thought he blocked well.”
Bartch started 20 games in 3 1/2 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 49ers signed him off the Jaguars’ practice squad on Nov. 21, 2023.”
