49ers first-year DC Sorensen not focusing on outside scrutiny
“Sorensen said he believes the new players on the 49ers are developing and getting better.
But on Sunday, the 49ers missed 19 tackles, according to PFF, and gave up 169 yards on 42 rushing attempts (4.0 average) to the Packers.
Afterward, Warner made a comment that could have been interpreted as direct criticism of the coaching staff.
“They presented different run looks than we had prepared for in the first half,” Warner said. “We adjusted as the game went on, which was helpful, but we got to be better from the jump.”
Sorensen confirmed the Packers did some things in the game that the 49ers did not expect to face.
“I think there were some formations,” Sorensen said. “They didn’t do it quite as much leading up to it. And they did it a few times in the game. We had repped them during the week, but not quite as much. So that was part of the stuff that we had to fix and make those adjustments.”
On Wednesday, Warner said he believed those un-scouted looks were inconsequential compared to the other areas in which the 49ers’ defense was deficient in Green Bay.
“Are those runs the reason why we gave up over 150 yards rushing? No, not at all,” Warner said. “I think all the (issues with) fundamentals and technique, that’s the reason we gave that up.”
“The Bills, meanwhile, will be without their top tight end Dalton Kincaid. They have rookies Keon Coleman (wrist) and DeWayne Carter (IR-wrist), as well as top linebacker Matt Milano (IR-biceps) as questionable.
Shanahan also said that Fred Warner, who revealed that he’s playing through a fractured bone in his ankle, isn’t at risk of the injury worsening.”
“Puni and the rest of the 49ers’ offensive line will have a chance to get the team going on Sunday night. Buffalo does not have a strong run defense. The Bills rank 30th in the league, allowing a 4.9-yard average per rushing attempt.
Puni will be matched throughout the game on Buffalo defensive tackles Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones.”
Should 49ers play with an eye toward next season? They are already doing that (paywall)
“The fourth-round receiver has been an exception to the team’s rookie dependence. While Cowing has been the primary punt returner, he’s played a scant 33 snaps on offense and has three targets in the passing game, all of them in the Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cowing, the 49ers’ fastest receiver, can stretch the field horizontally and vertically and might be someone who can add some spark to the screens and end arounds that have largely been absent or ineffective this year.
Tired of watching Deebo Samuel Sr. jog through the cheat-motion plays or get stuffed on outside runs? Why not give Cowing a shot? After all, he’s Samuel’s understudy.”
Kyle Shanahan, Brock Purdy share final updates ahead of 49ers-Bills Week 13 matchup
“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy spoke with reporters after Friday’s practice as the team prepares for its Week 13 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Here’s everything they said.”
49ers’ Purdy, Ward expected to play; Williams, Bosa ruled out
“That second checkup left Purdy with some questions about whether a more long-term injury might be in play.
“Anytime you go through an injury and stuff like that you want to know what’s going on with your body and how long something could be or if something’s serious or not, if you’re healthy or not,” Purdy said. “All those things definitely ran through my mind. But glad everything was clean within the MRI and knowing that we had a plan to get ready for this week, and I’m ready to go now.”
Purdy added that he began to feel like himself fully when he was throwing in Thursday’s practice.
“The different things that we did in terms of like a throwing program, I started feeling good,” Purdy said. “Thanksgiving, that’s when I practiced and felt good about it. And then today I felt really good at practice, too.”
“Lombardi: Bills 24, 49ers 13. This prediction assumes Purdy won’t play in the snow. But even if he does, I don’t think the 49ers will have enough in the tank to win at Buffalo — though the margin will be closer. Here’s another bold prediction: All four NFC West teams will lose this weekend, so the 49ers won’t lose any ground in what’s shaping up to be a mediocre race for the division.”
