49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen faces scrutiny over preparation (paywall)
“That said, there are differences between the 49ers’ past two coordinators. Unlike Wilks, Sorensen had an extensive background in the 49ers’ 4-3 defensive system when he was hired. In addition, Shanahan hasn’t publicly scolded Sorensen, with the latest example coming Wednesday when he was asked about Warner’s assessment of the 49ers being ill-prepared for some of Green Bay’s runs.
“They had two new runs that they hadn’t done before,” Shanahan said. “They’re not new runs — they’re just formations — which happens every week. … They had a new one and (we) took the bait twice and got our guys out of a gap. But that’s every week.”
Bosa was among a handful of players last season who offered lukewarm reviews of Wilks, which made Warner’s apparent criticism particularly notable. However, Warner echoed Shanahan on Wednesday by saying it’s common for teams to have gameplan surprises while noting Sorensen figured it out. Green Bay had 44 yards on 19 carries in the second half.”
49ers Injuries: List gets long, and a Fred Warner revelation
“But none of that was the headline. According to reports from the 49ers locker room from The Athletic’s Matt Barrows and ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, Trent Williams was moving around on a walking scooter, not putting pressure on his injured ankle.
More notable than that was a revelation from All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. Warner admitted that he suffered a fractured bone in his ankle in Week 5 against the New England Patriots, explaining the downturn in his performance.”
Purdy not throwing during 49ers practice, limited to handoffs
“We always get more than one when you get one and it seems all right, then you have some pain later in the week,” Shanahan said. “So you get another one to make sure you didn’t miss anything. And so, that’s what he did after the Thursday practice.”
49ers’ Warner reveals he’s playing on fractured ankle suffered in Week 4
“Warner, a three-time All-Pro selection, said he has received painkilling injections in order to suit up and play in games since his injury.
“It’s something I deal with every game,” Warner said. “I get on that table before the game and get it shot up every single game just to be able to roll.
“But it’s not an excuse. It’s what it is. It’s the NFL. You’re not going to be healthy. You got to go out there and find ways to execute and play at a high level and to win every single week.”
