49ers minutia minute: Christian McCaffrey’s big snap count; kicker beef ‘squashed’ (paywall)
“He was strong on kickoffs, something that has also plagued the 49ers’ special teams this season. All five went into the end zone for touchbacks.
As for the muffed punt, Shanahan said punt-coverage gunners are coached to shove the jammers, the role Luter was in, into the punt returner. He said it was Luter’s responsibility to know where Cowing, the return man, was on the play.
“It’s your job to get out of the way,” he said. “It’s not the returner’s job to look at you.”
PFF’s best and worst graded 49ers players vs. Buccaneers, plus snap counts
“Christian McCaffrey secured the top pass-blocking grade, earning an impressive 82.3. Returning from injury, McCaffrey earned a 70.2 offensive grade—his best since Week 14 last season, including the postseason. He logged 13 carries for 39 yards and added six catches for 68 yards.
Every 49ers offensive lineman allowed at least one pressure, with Trent Williams and Jake Brendel conceding the most at three pressures each. Despite being the highest-graded lineman, Puni still allowed two pressures, while Brendel’s 48.3 offensive grade and 17.6 pass-blocking grade were the lowest among the linemen.”
Kyle Shanahan provides injury updates, talks sideline scuffle
“I think it was a little bit overreaction [by Pepper] and I don’t think, you never want Deebo to throw a baby punch or anything on anybody on our own team, but Deebo also wasn’t saying anything bad to Jake, like it sounded,” Shanahan said. “He was meeting him on the field telling him to lock in, the same thing I’ll tell to an offensive player who just dropped some balls or made some penalties or something. You never sit there and belittle anybody or try to embarrass anyone. You try to challenge guys that you believe in and a way of, that’s how we speak to each other and telling someone they need to focus and lock in because we know you can do this.
“And I like Pep’s intentions on it, he’s got his kicker’s back. But I think he kind of interpreted wrong what Deebo was doing to him and overreacted a little bit. And Deebo didn’t like that and got him out of his face, and that’s really about where it ended.”
Elsewhere, Shanahan mentioned that there’s a chance for Charvarius Ward to return this week after the death of his daughter. He also said Chris Conley is expected back. Kevin Givens is a possibility, while Dre Greenlaw won’t come back this week.”
Shanahan addresses sideline skirmish with 49ers: ‘We squashed it’
“Shanahan said none of the involved individuals would be subject to any fines or discipline from the team.
“No,” Shanahan said. “I fine people for breaking rules. This is people just being football players and dealing with stuff on the sideline. I didn’t really chalk that up to a big deal at all.”
“I wanted to make sure I did and talked to the guys about it,” Shanahan said. “[I] talked to a number of guys on the team and we squashed it and we’re good.”
Grading the 49ers: Consider that ugly sideline incident ‘squashed’
“Green, who has now played 158 snaps, is PFF’s second-highest graded cornerback in the NFL. He was excellent in his first career start at outside corner with Ward out.”
“This was a character game all the way through,” Warner said. “We knew that they were going to fight, they were going to battle. We watched that game on Monday night, them going into Kansas City when everybody said they didn’t have a shot on offense losing their top two receivers. They have a heck of an offense, they have a heck of a scheme, players to run the scheme and the same was true today.
“I think the first half we stood up and played great defense, in the second half we came up short in some of those areas, but to hold them at the very end to a field goal to give our offense a chance to win the game was about as grimy as it’s going to get.”
“He’s really a hard guy to defend,” Belichick said. “And I don’t think McCaffrey gets enough credit for his inside running. He’s very good at setting up blocks and accelerates through the hole. He does a good job with his inside-run vision.
“We all know what he’s like on the perimeter and in the passing game; he’s so hard to tackle in space. But this guy has very good body lean. He has a lot of power for a smaller-sized guy. He reads the inside blocking patterns really well. And he’s just really impressive as a runner.”
