Barrows: The 49ers’ ‘weight-bearing walls,’ and the strategy behind a sudden roster revamp (paywall)
“San Francisco believes it can depend on its own “weight-bearing walls” while it restocks the defensive cupboard. That group includes McCaffrey, Kittle and Brock Purdy on offense and Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Deommodore Lenoir on defense.
The 49ers likely are confident in their plan because they’ve seen it work for their division rival.”
New Seahawks QB Sam Darnold credits career turnaround to old teammate, 49ers’ Brock Purdy (paywall)
“I really thank Brock a ton for just his style of play and how he described his style: ‘We’ve got a ton of great playmakers on offense — my job is just to play point guard and get the ball in their hands and let them go do great things with the rock,’” Darnold said. “And when I started to change my thought process as a quarterback to just getting the ball in my guys’ hands, then that’s kind of where it unlocked for me a little bit.”
49ers’ offseason strategy isn’t surprising, but it deserves questioning
“Vegas still places the 49ers as the favorites to win the NFC West. Their odds are fourth in the NFC and seventh to win the Super Bowl.
Those optimistic odds seem ridiculous until you look at the players who remain with the 49ers.
There are 18 players in the NFC West whose contracts call for them to make $15 million or more per season. The 49ers have seven of those players. The Rams and Cardinals are next with four apiece.”
“Ogbonna (6-2, 207) was not among the quarterbacks invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. However, Fowler notes that the signal-caller impressed the scouts on hand with a strong performance during the Pro Day.
Ogbonna transferred from Southeast Missouri State in 2023 but saw limited action that season, attempting just 21 passes (one of which resulted in a touchdown) but rushing 51 times for 214 yards and three touchdowns.
He emerged as Buffalo’s starter in 2024, completing 190 of 336 pass attempts for 2,381 yards, 19 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 13 starts. He also added 343 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 123 carries.”
